Why IB Students Struggle

The IB isn't just harder than A-Levels — it's a fundamentally different kind of challenge that requires a different kind of support.

Workload Overwhelm

6 subjects + TOK + EE + CAS + IAs — all running simultaneously. Unlike A-Levels where you focus on 3–4 subjects, IB students must manage breadth AND depth. Most students underestimate the cumulative workload until mid-Year 1 when IA deadlines start stacking.

Internal Assessment Mastery

IAs count for 20–25% of each subject grade but follow strict, unfamiliar formats. A Science IA needs a real experiment with proper methodology. A Math IA needs an original exploration. Students who treat IAs as 'just coursework' lose marks on criteria they didn’t know existed.

HL Depth vs SL Breadth

HL subjects demand significantly more depth — 240 hours vs 150 for SL. Students often choose HL subjects based on interest alone, without understanding the assessment complexity. HL Math AA, HL Physics, and HL Chemistry are particularly demanding and require consistent study from day one.

TOK & EE Bonus Points

3 bonus points sound small, but they can be the difference between 38 and 41 — and university admission. Many students leave TOK and EE as afterthoughts, scoring C/D grades when an A/B is achievable with proper guidance on argument structure and assessment criteria.

IB Core: TOK, Extended Essay & CAS

These three components are unique to the IB — and often the most overlooked. A tutor helps your child earn the bonus points most students leave on the table.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

A course exploring the nature of knowledge across disciplines. Students write a 1,600-word essay and create an exhibition linking real-world objects to TOK concepts.

Up to 3 bonus points (combined with EE)

Common struggle: Abstract thinking, connecting knowledge areas, structuring philosophical arguments within strict word limits.

Extended Essay (EE)

A 4,000-word independent research paper on a topic of the student’s choice, supervised by a school mentor. It develops university-level research and writing skills.

Up to 3 bonus points (combined with TOK)

Common struggle: Topic narrowing, research methodology, maintaining academic rigour across 4,000 words, time management alongside other IB demands.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

A portfolio of experiences across creativity, physical activity, and community service. Not graded, but must be completed to receive the diploma.

Pass/Fail (required for diploma)

Common struggle: Reflection writing, documenting learning outcomes, balancing CAS hours with academic workload.

IB Diploma vs Singapore A-Levels

Different systems, different strengths. Here's how they compare — and why each requires a different tutoring approach.

IB Diploma

  • 6 subjects across different groups (breadth)
  • 3 Higher Level + 3 Standard Level
  • Core: TOK + Extended Essay + CAS
  • Max score: 45 points
  • Mix of exams + Internal Assessments (20–25%)
  • Recognised globally by international universities
  • Broader workload — suits well-rounded students

Singapore A-Levels

  • 3–4 subjects of student’s choice (depth)
  • H1 (1 subject) + H2 (3 subjects)
  • Core: Project Work + GP
  • Grading: A–U per subject (UAS score)
  • Mostly exam-based assessment
  • Primarily recognised in SG, UK, Australia
  • Deeper specialisation — suits focused students

Why 1-to-1 IB Tuition Works

The IB rewards independent thinking and structured argumentation. A tutor doesn't just teach content — they teach your child how to think and write like an IB examiner expects.

Tailored to IB assessment criteria

IB grading is criteria-based, not norm-referenced. A tutor teaches your child exactly what examiners look for in each mark band — the difference between a 5 and a 7 is often presentation, not knowledge.

IA and EE guidance from day one

Internal Assessments and the Extended Essay count significantly. A tutor helps with topic selection, methodology, and drafting — catching structural issues early, not after the school deadline passes.

Managing the IB workload

Six subjects plus core components is overwhelming. A tutor helps prioritise: which subjects need the most time, when to focus on IAs vs exams, and how to keep CAS reflections on track.

International school curriculum expertise

IB tutors understand the international school environment — different pacing than local schools, different textbooks, and assessment styles that reward critical thinking over rote memorisation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from parents about IB tuition in Singapore.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a two-year pre-university curriculum offered by international schools worldwide. Students study 6 subjects across defined groups, plus 3 core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). The maximum score is 45 points — 42 from subjects (7 points each) plus 3 bonus points from TOK and EE.
Rates depend on the subject level and tutor type. For IB MYP (Years 7–10), expect $40–$55/hr for part-time tutors and $55–$80/hr for full-time tutors. For IB Diploma (HL/SL), rates are $55–$70/hr for part-time tutors and $70–$100/hr for full-time tutors. MOE-trained teachers aren’t typically available for IB — instead, look for tutors with IB marking experience, which commands similar rates.
We match tutors across all 6 IB subject groups: English A/B, Mathematics AA/AI, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Business Management, History, Geography, Psychology, Visual Arts, and more. We also provide specialised support for TOK essays, Extended Essays, and Internal Assessments (IAs) across all subjects.
Competitive universities typically require 38–40+ out of 45 for popular courses. NUS and NTU in Singapore generally look for 38+ for most programmes, 40+ for Medicine and Law. UK universities like Oxbridge require 40–42+. US universities use IB scores holistically alongside other factors. A tutor helps identify the score targets for your child’s specific university goals.
Higher Level (HL) subjects are studied in greater depth — 240 teaching hours vs 150 for Standard Level (SL). HL requires deeper analysis, more complex assessments, and is weighted more heavily by universities. Students choose 3 HL and 3 SL subjects. Choosing the right HL/SL combination is critical for university applications, especially for competitive courses.
Ideally at the start of Year 1 (IB1) — the IB Diploma is fast-paced and content-heavy. Students who fall behind in the first term often struggle to catch up because Internal Assessments (IAs) and the Extended Essay add to the workload mid-year. If your child is already in Year 2, it’s not too late — a tutor can focus on exam technique and high-impact revision strategies.
A-Levels let students specialise in 3–4 subjects. The IB requires 6 subjects across different groups, plus TOK, EE, and CAS — it’s broader and tests different skills. IB assessment is a mix of exams and coursework (IAs), while A-Levels are mostly exam-based. The IB is often considered more demanding in terms of workload, but provides a well-rounded education valued by international universities.
Yes — IAs typically count for 20–25% of the final subject grade. They require independent research, structured writing, and subject-specific methodologies. A tutor guides your child through topic selection, research design, data analysis, and the writing process. This is especially valuable for Science IAs (lab reports) and Math IAs (exploration papers) where the format is unfamiliar.
The Extended Essay (EE) is a 4,000-word independent research paper. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) requires a 1,600-word essay and an exhibition. Together, they can earn up to 3 bonus points. Many students underestimate these components — a tutor helps with topic selection, argument structure, and the specific assessment criteria that IB examiners use.
Very effective for most IB subjects. IB assessment values analytical writing, structured arguments, and problem-solving — all of which work well in an online format. Digital whiteboards are excellent for Math and Science problem-solving. Document sharing makes IA and EE review seamless. Many IB tutors teach students across multiple international schools, so online is often the default mode.
