University
Your Goal
2 years. Every grade counts toward your child's university admission score.
The JC Reality Check
JC is not just “harder secondary school.” The pace, depth, and expectations change completely. Here's what catches most students and parents off guard.
2–3 grade
drop is typical
Most JC1 students see a significant grade drop in their first block test compared to O-Level results.
6 hours
of A-Level Math exams
H2 Mathematics has two 3-hour papers. Sustained concentration and exam stamina matter.
70 points
UAS maximum
The new university admission score (from 2026) means every H2 grade carries more weight than before.
90%
of JC students enter uni
The university pathway is why most families choose JC — but competition for top courses is fierce.
Your child doesn't have to figure this out alone.
Get matched with a JC tutorUnderstanding the H1/H2/H3 Subject System
JC uses a tiered subject system that's completely different from O-Level. Here's what your child takes — and what each level means.
H2
3 content subjects
Full depth. Two academic units each. These form the core of your university admission score — each worth up to 20 rank points.
Examples: H2 Math, H2 Chemistry, H2 Physics, H2 Economics
H1
1 content + GP + PW + MTL
Less depth, one academic unit. H1 General Paper is compulsory and worth up to 10 rank points. H1 Project Work is now Pass/Fail (from 2026).
GP counts toward UAS. Don't underestimate it.
H3
Optional advanced extension
Advanced research or university-module extension of an H2 subject. For top students only. Does not count toward UAS rank points.
Not needed for university admission — pursue only if genuinely interested.
The Contrasting Subject Rule
Every JC student must take at least one subject from a contrasting discipline. Science stream students need one humanities/arts subject (typically H1 Economics or Geography). Arts stream students need one science/math subject (typically H1 Math). This affects subject combination choices — and sometimes determines which subject your child needs tuition support for.
JC Subjects We Cover
From H2 Mathematics to General Paper — we match tutors who specialise at the A-Level standard your child needs.
H2 Mathematics
Pure Math (complex numbers, vectors, calculus, differential equations) and Statistics (probability distributions, hypothesis testing). Two 3-hour papers.
H2 Chemistry
Physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry. Four papers including a 2.5-hour practical. Requires strong conceptual links across all three branches.
Science streamH2 Physics
Mechanics, waves, electricity, magnetism, quantum physics, and nuclear physics. Four papers including a practical. Mathematical rigour is essential.
Science streamH2 Economics
Microeconomics (market structures, market failure) and macroeconomics (AD-AS model, trade, globalisation). Case study and essay-based exam format.
H1 General Paper
Argumentative essay writing on global issues and a comprehension paper testing inference, tone analysis, and summary skills. Compulsory for all JC students.
H2 Biology
Molecular biology, genetics, ecology, and physiology. Four papers including a practical. Drawing skills and data analysis are heavily tested.
Science streamH2 History
Southeast Asian history and international history (Cold War, decolonisation). Source-based and essay questions requiring deep analysis.
Arts streamH2 Literature
Close reading, critical analysis, and essay writing across prose, poetry, and drama texts. Requires both analytical rigour and creative expression.
Arts streamCommon JC Subject Combinations
Your child's subject combination determines which university courses they can apply for. Here are the most popular pairings — and what each unlocks.
PCME
H2 Physics, H2 Chemistry, H2 Math + H1 Economics
Most popular science combination. Keeps options open for Engineering, Computing, and most Science courses.
BCME
H2 Biology, H2 Chemistry, H2 Math + H1 Economics
Required for Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy. Biology + Chemistry is the core pre-med pairing.
PCMG
H2 Physics, H2 Chemistry, H2 Math + H1 Geography
For students who prefer Geography over Economics as their contrasting subject.

The New University Admission Score (2026)
From 2026, the UAS replaces the old 90-point system. Your child's 3 best H2 subjects + H1 GP = maximum 70 points. Project Work is now Pass/Fail and no longer contributes rank points.
What this means for tuition:
- Every H2 grade matters more — there's no PW to pad the score
- Moving an H2 from C to B is worth 2.5 rank points — often the difference for competitive courses
- GP counts for 10 out of 70 points — don't neglect it
UAS Grade-to-Point Conversion
| Grade | Exam Score | H2 Points | H1 Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 70%+ | 20 | 10 |
| B | 60–69% | 17.5 | 8.75 |
| C | 55–59% | 15 | 7.5 |
| D | 50–54% | 12.5 | 6.25 |
| E | 45–49% | 10 | 5 |
| S | 40–44% | 5 | 2.5 |
Max UAS = 3 × 20 (H2) + 10 (GP) = 70 points
