A one-grade move in one subject changes the aggregate by a point, and at many JCs the range is only a few points wide. Find a tutor for the subject that would move it
How L1R5 Is Calculated
L1R5 adds six O-Level grades: English or a Higher Mother Tongue as L1, then five relevant subjects. R1 must be a Humanities subject, R2 a Mathematics or Science subject, R3 either, and R4 and R5 any two others. A1 counts as 1 point and F9 as 9, so lower is better.
| Slot | Subjects MOE allows |
|---|---|
| L1 | English Language or a Higher Mother Tongue (Higher Chinese, Higher Malay, Higher Tamil) |
| R1 | Your best Humanities subject — History, Geography, a Literature, a Social Studies combination, Higher Art, Higher Music, Chinese or Malay (Special Programme), or Bahasa Indonesia |
| R2 | Your best Mathematics or Science subject — E-Math, A-Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or a combined Science |
| R3 | Your best remaining Humanities, Mathematics or Science subject |
| R4, R5 | Your two best remaining subjects, except Religious Knowledge |

Two rules trip students up. A Higher Mother Tongue and the Mother Tongue of the same language can’t both be counted — if Higher Chinese is L1, Chinese can’t be R4 or R5. And Religious Knowledge never counts. The calculator applies both, and when your child has English and a Higher Mother Tongue it tries each as L1 and keeps the lower total. Every subject MOE accepts is on MOE’s subject category list.
Millennia Institute works differently in the 2027 JAE. MI uses L1R4: L1, then two subjects from Humanities, Mathematics or Science, then any two others — with no separate Humanities slot. Its threshold is also a gross of 20 or better. For the full explanation with worked examples, read our guide to L1R5 and L1R4 scoring, and for choosing subjects that keep the aggregate strong, our O-Level subject combination guide.
L1R5 Bonus Points and the Gross-First Rule
Bonus points come off the gross score to give the net score used for posting, up to a maximum of 4. They can’t rescue a gross score above 20: MOE’s first criterion is that the gross must not exceed 20, and only then are bonus points subtracted.
| Bonus type | Points | Counts for |
|---|---|---|
| CCA grade: Excellent | 2 | JC and MI |
| CCA grade: Good | 1 | JC and MI |
| English and Higher Mother Tongue, both A1 to C6 | 2 | JC and MI |
| Chinese (Special Programme), Malay (Special Programme) or Bahasa Indonesia, A1 to C6 | 2 | JC and MI |
| Affiliated JC, chosen as 1st (or 1st and 2nd) choice | 2 | That JC only |
| Language Elective Programme, if posted to the JC offering it | 2 more | That JC only |

The CCA grade comes from your child’s school record, so check it is right before results day — MOE asks students to report any discrepancy to the school. A student with 6 points of bonus still gets only 4 off; the calculator shows the cap when it applies. The Language Elective Programme points sit outside the four-point list in MOE’s table, so the calculator shows them as a separate line.
L1R4 From 2028: What Changes for JC and MI
From the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise, JC and MI both use one L1R4 aggregate of five G3 subjects. The JC threshold drops to a gross of 16, MI stays at 20, and the bonus cap falls from 4 to 3. It applies to students sitting the new SEC examinations from 2027.
| Aspect | L1R5 · 2027 JAE | L1R4 · 2028 PSE |
|---|---|---|
| Subjects counted | 6 (L1 + R1–R5) | 5 (L1 + R1–R4) |
| JC threshold (gross) | 20 or better | 16 or better |
| MI threshold (gross) | 20 or better (MI’s own L1R4) | 20 or better (same L1R4 as JC) |
| Bonus points cap | 4 | 3 |
| Subject level | O-Level | G3 (O-Level counts as G3) |
| JC conditional admission | Gross ≤ 15 | Gross ≤ 12 |

The relevant-subject groups barely move: R1 is still Humanities, R2 Mathematics or Science, R3 either, and R4 any subject. What changes is the weight of each one — with five subjects instead of six, a single weak grade moves the total further. MOE also computes English and the Higher Mother Tongue as L1 separately and uses the lower score that qualifies. Switch the calculator to L1R4 to try it, and read MOE’s 2028 admission criteria for the worked examples.
2026 JAE Cut-Off Ranges for Every JC and MI
Each range is the net aggregate of the students MOE posted to that course in the 2026 JAE, from the best score to the last one admitted. Lower is better, so a net score at or below the second number was inside last year’s range.
Cut-off ranges: 2026 JAE (released 3 Feb 2026). Checked 2026-10. MOE updates these each posting day — verify on MOE SchoolFinder.
Open MOE SchoolFinder (opens in a new tab)The last column compares your net score with each range: your JC net for the JCs (without affiliation points, which count at one JC only) and your MI net for Millennia Institute. MOE says these ranges are a reference only and do not guarantee admission.
